About
Brendon Thomas Canavan
With more than a decade of experience in public safety and emergency response, Brendon T. Canavan has been dedicated to the service and protection of his local communities, employing both a proactive and reactive approach. His professional journey began in early 2012 when he joined his hometown's emergency rescue squad as a New Jersey (NJ) Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Concurrently, he pursued his education at Berkeley College, culminating in the successful attainment of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice in 2016.
In 2014, Brendon expanded his skill set by attending the Middlesex County Fire Academy in Sayreville, NJ, where he achieved his NJ Firefighter certification and embarked on his career with the Township of Scotch Plains Fire Department. Presently, Brendon holds the position of Fire Captain, leading a platoon of firefighters on and off the fire ground. In early 2023, in addition to his role as fire captain, assumed the role of "Supervising Emergency Medical Technician" and established a new Basic Life Support (BLS) program under the direction of the Fire Department. His unwavering efforts resulted in the Department's licensing by the NJ Department of Health, enabling the program to commence its operations. Furthermore, Brendon serves as one of three emergency management coordinators for the Township of Scotch Plains, offering his expertise in reviewing operations plans and assisting the public during times of disaster.
Moreover, in 2017, Brendon expanded his role by joining the Union County Emergency Services Division, continuing his practice as an EMT and later joining the Union County Hazardous Materials Response Team following the successful completion of the NJ Hazardous Materials Technician Level Training with the New Jersey State Police. His dedication and contributions within Union County led to his promotion to the position of Emergency Services Lieutenant in 2021, where he oversaw day-to-day operations for a county-wide response area. In late October 2021, Brendon had the privilege of supporting the President of the United States when the President and his team visited local educational facilities within the Union County Response Area.
In addition to his extensive field experience, Brendon holds a Master of Science Degree in Disaster & Emergency Management from NOVA Southeastern University and possesses numerous certifications, including FEMA ICS, fire inspector, and fire instructor qualifications.
Brendon's extensive background in public safety and emergency management has thoroughly equipped him to extend his service to others, only this time taking a proactive stance in preparing individuals to effectively manage emergency situations. Brendon embodies a personality and work ethic that enables him to maintain his composure in high-stress environments and lead the charge in accomplishing tasks.
